Homemade Sweet Applesauce

by | May 11, 2019 | Sauces & Dressings

I’m not a big fan of store bought applesauce, but homemade applesauce?  Yes please!   Making homemade apple sauce is a great way to use up those leftover apples from the fruit bowl. It is quick to make and unbelievably delicious.  Believe it or not, my favorite thing to eat with sweetened apples sauce with is roasted pork!!  But I also love it with baked chicken, roasted veggies, in yogurt parfaits with granola – it’s just a great thing to have in the refrigerator!

I used Gala apples for this recipe, but I often mix it up with other varieties or even a combination of apples.  Some of the other apples I like to use include Fuji, Golden Delicious, McIntosh, or Granny Smiths!  You can definitely adjust the sugar to change the level of sweetness, infact, some people leave it out all together, but I love sweet applesauce.  Warning:  If you try this, you may never be able to buy or eat store bought applesauce again!

I don’t often buy cooking tools that just have one purpose, but there is a cooking tool that I love just for apples.  The Johnny Apple Peeler cuts down my time so much when peeling and coring apples, if you are going to be making a lot of apple sauce or apple pie, this is one tool you might love.  Just be sure to read the manual, it helps you make all the adjustments you need to make it work properly!

Ingredients:

  • 2lbs apples, (I used Gala for this batch)
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1/2- 3/4 cup sugar (depending how sweet you want it)
  • 1/8 tsp cinnamon
  • Pinch of nutmeg

Instructions:

  1. Peel and core apples then chop in to small chunks.
  2. Add the apples, lemon juice, water and sugar to a large saucepan and bring to a boil.  Reduce to a simmer and cook 15 minutes, stirring every now and then.
  3. Add the cinnamon and nutmeg and cook an additional 10 minutes or until the apples are super soft.
  4. You can use a potato masher to crush it up or I used my immersion blender to blend up about half of the sauce to a more fine consistency and left the rest chunky.  (I like texture!)  Feel free to blend or mash to the consistency you prefer.
